With the full moon hovering overhead, Ryan Montague was the star on the field as the running back ran amock for 249 yards and a pair of scores to lift the Highlanders to a 20-10 victory over the Tigers.
Despite a scoreless first quarter, there was plenty of action. The Highlanders were moving the ball with ease as Montague picked up 26-yards on a run to the outside. But on the next play TWHS fumbled, and Collins recovered the ball at midfield.
The Woodlands defense stepped up and held the Tigers on fourth-and-one as the entire front line stacked up Collins quarterback Jake Pawelek. The Highlanders were unable to move the chains, courtesy of a penalty, and were forced to punt.
Klein Collins moved down field and attempted a 22-yard field goal, but Taylor Charbonnet got a hand on it, recovered it, and returned it 24-yards to the Highlander 36. The Woodlands continued to shoot themselves in the foot.
After Brett Parsons completed a 14-yard pass play to Taylor Grote, a holding penalty negated it, and eventually forced a punt.
Collins took over at their own 27 after a booming 51- yard punt by Kyle Drabek. The Tigers had to settle for a 30-yard field goal to put them on top 3-0 with 5:34 remaining in the half.
The Highlanders managed to get on the board when Montague capped off a 68-yard, eight play drive with a one- yard leap into the end zone with 1:49 to go. The PAT sailed wide right as TWHS took a 6-3 lead into the locker room.
The Woodlands marching band, along with the Highsteppers, took the honors during halftime with an outstanding performance that pumped up the crowd.
In the third, Michael Goodson, who was virtually shut down by the mighty Highlander defense, finally punched one in from the three for the go-ahead score, making it 10-6 in favor of the Tigers.
On the ensuing possession, The Woodlands put together an impressive drive that began on their own 20. Montague was the work horse, carrying the ball seven times for 56 yards before exiting the game with an injury. Facing first-and-goal from the eight, the Highlanders were held on all four tries, allowing Klein Collins to take over at the one.
On the first play, the Tigers lost the ball and Zach Carpenter recovered the loose pigskin in the end zone for the touchdown that put The Woodlands on top 13-10.
Collins quickly moved the chains and fell short on another field goal, the fourth miss on the night.
The Highlanders capitalized when Montague busted up the gut, and from 73-yards out in a footrace to the end zone, left the defenders in the dust as he tacked on a charity score to lift The Woodlands to a 20-10 victory to remain undefeated in district.
